WYPR reported that Maryland colleges and universities will no longer be able to sign specific types of contracts with sports betting apps beginning July 1, 2023.
Baltimore County Senator Shelly Hettleman says SB620 came in response to her reading about a contract one out-of-state university signed with a sports betting app. “For every time one of their students downloaded the app and placed a bet, the university was getting $30 back,” Hettleman explained to WYPR. “When I heard about that, I (said) that should not be happening here in Maryland. That seems predatory to me.” Schools can not sign contracts where they would receive any compensation for getting students to use them starting July 1 in Maryland.
A second bill OK’d by lawmakers, SB621, creates independent evaluators for the contracts colleges and universities can sign with sports betting apps in Maryland. Those evaluators would also look at the content provided on apps by betting experts, influencers, and partners. Hettleman says the move is needed for better transparency.
Goucher College Poll, in partnership with The Baltimore Banner, reported on new findings about sports betting in Maryland. According to a survey of 800 people, 23 percent indicated they'd likely wager on sports in the coming year (either in-person or online).
Journalist Pamela Wood noted that, "White Marylanders were also less likely to gamble on sports at 18%, compared to 32% of Black residents and 27% for those who have another racial identity."
In a recent announcement, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Commission (MLGCC) recently announced that it has approved the qualifications of Queen Sportsbook Maryland, LLC for a mobile sports wagering license. The next step for Queen Sportsbook Maryland is expected to come in May when the Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC) is scheduled to meet and may consider awarding a license at that time.
The MLGCC also found Queen Sportsbook Maryland qualified for an online sports wagering operator license. The company is currently evaluating third-party providers for servers.
Amanda Yeager of the Baltimore Business Journal reported that "Sports betting is live in the Baltimore region.
Live Casino & Hotel in Hanover and Baltimore's Horseshoe Casino switched on their sportsbooks Friday, a long-anticipated step that follows three years of debate, negotiations and planning for sports betting in Maryland. The first sports wagers in the state were cast Thursday at MGM National Harbor in Prince George's County.
In Baltimore, Horseshoe's new sportsbook is another piece in plans for a growing entertainment hub that casino officials hope will increase traffic and revenues. The Warner Street Entertainment District will also feature a Topgolf facility and a performance venue, the Paramount."

Amanda Yeager writes, "The Ravens and Caesars Entertainment will collaborate on sports betting as the new industry takes root in Maryland. The NFL team and Caesars, which counts Baltimore's Horseshoe Casino as a subsidiary, announced a deal Wednesday that establishes Caesars Sportsbook as a sports betting partner for the Ravens and gives the casino operator prime visibility within M&T Bank Stadium....
"The partnership with Caesars is the third agreement the Ravens have forged with sports betting entities since state lawmakers gave sports wagers the go-ahead this spring. The team has previously announced deals with BetMGM and DraftKings.
Kevin Rochlitz, chief sales officer for the Ravens, said the agreement with Caesars is the team's last on sports betting.
